Thank YOU for making SOS 2014 a success!

November 3, 2014

SOSLogo2014They came, they saw the thermometer, and they slept outside anyway. Thanks to nearly 2,000 Sleep Out Saturday participants and committed friends of Bridge Communities, more than 110 homeless families will have a better, brighter future.

The night kicked off with a fun-filled, energizing rally in the Bridge Communities parking lot in downtown Glen Ellyn. More than 90 groups, ranging from small families to organized groups of 125+, were bused to the site and enjoyed the pre-show entertainment provided by Sounds Abound.

Then, Stefan Holt from NBC 5 really got the party started! As the emcee of the event, he recognized all the groups, towns and sponsors involved in making Sleep Out Saturday such a fantastic event, and introduced the School of Performing Arts, who sang a moving rendition of “Brave.”

Stefan unveiled the rally video, so participants could see firsthand how the lives of two Bridge clients, Jaleen and Nydia, have been transformed in their journey from homelessness to hope. Then, Stefan invited Jaleen, Nydia and their children onstage, and they all received a huge round of applause!

The rally closed with the School of Performing Arts returning to perform “Roar,” in honor of all the Bridge families and the obstacles they’ve overcome.

Then, the groups were bused back to their Sleep Out Saturday sites, where they braved the freezing weather outside in tents, cardboard boxes and their cars, to spend the night outside and experience homelessness for a night. Many groups also participated in activities from Bridge’s “What’s It Like To Be Homeless?” curriculum to make it an even more meaningful experience.

The temperature continued to plummet throughout the night to around 25 degrees, but our dedicated Sleep Out Saturday participants soldiered on. They emerged the next morning a little frigid, but with a deeper appreciation of the challenges faced by homeless families.

Sleep Out Saturday may be over for this year, but YOU still have the power to make a difference in the lives of the homeless families served by Bridge Communities! When you make a pledge to Sleep Out Saturday, you help transform the lives of families like Jaleen’s and Nydia’s. You can also give to Bridge Communities transitional housing program, and help families move from homelessness to hope year-round.

Thank you for your support, and for making Sleep Out Saturday 2014 the biggest and best one yet!
