Discover the New Face of Homelessness

September 27, 2011

“The biggest misconception is that people think the homeless are just like what they see in the movies; they don’t realize that the new faces of homelessness are suburban families with kids.”  These are the words of Jill Markussen, a formerly homeless mother of six and creator of the New Face of Homelessness Symposium.

Jill has conquered what many would have considered insurmountable odds, overcoming job loss, the death of a child, her home burning down, and homelessness – twice.  But Jill is a fighter.  Not only is she fighting for her family; Jill is fighting for homeless families in DuPage County.

The 2nd Annual New Face of Homelessness Symposium is one more way Jill Markussen is fighting for the parents and children of DuPage County who are without homes, without beds, without stability and security night after night.  The New Face of Homelessness Symposium introduces the new faces – the real faces – of homelessness that we don’t expect: children, families, seniors.

“If we could all be more aware of what’s going on in our society, that’s the first step,” Jill adds.  “A lot of people don’t realize that it could happen to you and me.  And when they realize that, that’s when people start taking action.”
